Description
Midões is part of the municipality of Tábua and is a region rich in history and antiquity, with traces dating from prehistory to the Roman occupation, as well as from more recent periods that accompanied the country’s evolution, such as the pillories and manor houses. The town has kept its traditions and its charmingly rural character alive, where the agricultural heritage is still of great importance, shaping the lifestyle of its residents. The parish of Midões also benefits from the fact that it belongs to the Serra da Estrela Cheese Designated Region and the Dão Wine Demarcated Region, to which the entire municipality of Tábua belongs. Midões also takes pride in its heritage, notably the Mother Church, dating from 1882 and dedicated to Nossa Senhora das Neves; the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Dores from the 28th century; the Manueline pillory; the Roman bridge; and many other architectural and ethnographic landmarks.
Throughout the entire route, we have the
opportunity to admire the magnificent landscapes with the Serra da Estrela
as a backdrop, and, since we are on the Beira Plateau and in the heart of the
Beiras region, the Caramulo and Lousã mountain ranges are also almost always
within sight.
On the other hand, the small Cavalos River, with its
unusual riverbed, is a major attraction along the route, in the
Sumes area. Here, too, the flora and fauna dot the landscape with
majestic colors, where pine and cork oak trees dominate the scenery and
foxes and wild boars make this their home.
