Description
The route begins at the square in front of the church in Trigaches; follow the trail markers until you reach a windmill that has been converted into a residence, where you turn right. A little further on, you’ll find an “American-style” water pump mill that, until very recently, drew water from deep underground with just a slight breeze. A little further on, take a sharp right turn and continue along flat terrain flanked by cultivated fields. Further ahead, after turning left, you’ll see a century-old olive grove; continue until you reach the quarry. The gates that once served as the entrance have been replaced by large blocks of marble to prevent unauthorized entry, since, at present, no extraction is taking place, although the quarry remains active. You should pass to the left, stepping over the stone in an area where it is lower, and enter. Here you can enjoy a surprising and almost unexpected landscape. For a better view, follow the left side of the pit until you reach the point where you can look out over the length of the quarry. Stop to take in the view, take photos, or simply relax. Take special care on this path inside the quarry to avoid slipping and falling, especially if you have children with you! Do not dive or swim! To continue the route, return to the entrance area and follow the same path, turning right into the olive grove. You’ll reach the lime kiln, which was decommissioned in the first decade of the 21st century. There you can find more information by consulting the interpretive panel. Follow the path to the canal, which carries water from the Alvito dam to the Pisão dam, and which is part of the Alqueva project, the largest artificial lake in Europe. You cross an area of small farms and further ahead, already at the entrance to the village, you pass the public washhouse, which is still used by the local population today, and a small marble processing plant; continue up the street and you will reach the starting point.
