The hiking trail from Pedra da Ferida to Louçainha is located in the municipality of Penela, in the parish of Espinhal, and runs along a stream known as the Ribeira de Azenha. The main highlight of this trail is a waterfall about 25 meters high, which can be glimpsed from the stream bed and is poetically referred to as the Cascata da Pedra da Ferida. The name stems from the local people’s interpretation of a natural phenomenon (oxidation) that occurs when the rocks come into contact with water. The trail can be hiked in either direction; however, due to its difficulty, the uphill route (Pedra da Ferida – Louçainha) is recommended, and it is not suitable for families with small children. The Azenha stream flows through several native woodlands that serve as a living testament to the Iberian subtropical landscape. The woodlands are composed of Louriço forests, with all the characteristics and ecological values inherent to this type of habitat. Along this route, to enhance the enjoyment of the landscape, there is a range of facilities and infrastructure, such as Rest Stops, Picnic Areas, Rest Areas, and nine crossings that allow access between the stream’s banks. Along the trail, on the EN 347 road connecting Espinhal to Castanheira de Pêra, there is also a lookout point near the village of Carvalhal da Serra, which offers a prime vantage point for a better view of the landscape. As such, we recommend visiting it as a complement to this route. Along the route, all equipment and signage have been assigned a sequential SOS code. In the event of an accident, this code must be reported to emergency services to quickly locate the victim.
