GR39 - Grande Rota da Cortiçada walking

Proença-a-Nova 13.5 kms

Description

The Great Cortiçada Trail offers a 135-kilometer journey of discovery through the municipality of Proença-a-Nova, its people and traditions, its historical and cultural heritage, and, above all, its biodiversity. The abundance of cork oaks and beehives may have been the origin of the name Cortiçada, by which Proença-a-Nova was known in its early days and which now gives its name to the GR39. In a forest dominated by pine and eucalyptus groves, remnants of native species can still be found, such as cork oaks, chestnut trees, oaks, junipers, and arbutus trees.

The route, which is signposted in both directions, can be traveled on foot or by bicycle, and you are encouraged to set aside time to stop at the viewpoints, alongside the clear streams, or to explore the archaeological, historical, or geological heritage that unfolds with every step. The 135 kilometers have been divided into seven stages to allow for rest between them, with at least one local lodging option in each village. Although marked for East and West, our suggestion is that you follow the sunset.
