GR50 - Grande Rota Peneda-Gerês walking

Melgaço 200 kms

Description

Stretching approximately 200 km across 19 stages, the GR 50 - Grande Peneda-Gerês Route crosses the Peneda-Gerês National Park, from Ameijoeira, in Castro Laboreiro, in the far northwest, to Tourém, in the far northeast.

The route is very diverse, alternating between predominantly rural paths, ancient paved roads and other historic routes, and grazing trails in areas where nature and the tranquility of the mountains reign supreme.

Truly inspired by the culture and way of life of the communities that have long inhabited this territory, the GR 50 reveals Roman roads and medieval cobblestone paths, the routes of seasonal migrations between the pastures and winter pastures, the old trails traveled by shepherds to the high-altitude meadows, pilgrims’ paths to places of worship, and smuggling routes, among other itineraries.

Throughout its entire length, there is no shortage of opportunities to discover the rich historical and archaeological heritage of the National Park, experience the traditions and culture of the communities inhabiting this mountainous region, and savor local flavors.

Step by step, points of natural interest also unfold, notably the oak forests—true sanctuaries of biodiversity—where important species of flora and fauna find refuge. At higher elevations, the route winds through the rocky slopes of the mountains, climbing the inclines to lead hikers to the tranquility of the mountains.

Each hike offers a new experience. Each season brings a new experience, almost as if it were a different route.

Connecting the five municipalities that make up the protected area of the Peneda-Gerês National Park, this Grande Rota is a linear route, organized into stages that begin and end in villages where there are some support services, namely lodging. It includes longer stages and others that are relatively short, following rural, agricultural, and forest paths through valleys, along rivers, and through the mountains, so the levels of difficulty for each stage vary. It can be walked in either direction, as it is marked in both directions. Although it can be walked year-round, the experience is most rewarding in spring and fall.
