Description
This route showcases one of the most beautiful regions of the Alentejo plain.
Vila Nova da Baronia, a parish in the municipality of Alvito, offers walks and history worth exploring.
The
Praça da República, with its pillory, is the starting point for
this route, which combines the man-made landscape and built heritage
with the natural landscape and rural heritage.
Also noteworthy
in the historic center are
several monuments, such as the Chapel of Nossa Senhora
da Conceição and the
Mother Church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção.
The lowland landscape then reveals its surprises and unique features: shaded trails and streams, paths with nightingales, herons, kestrels, and rabbits, trails lined with rosemary and heather, and some cork oaks and holm oaks. The highlight of the route is the 17th-century Chapel of Santa Águeda (which gives this Route its name). Here, we are invited to enjoy moments of pleasant rest in harmonious conviviality with the religious building and the surrounding landscape.
