The “Pico do Coelho” trail is a nature trail that runs largely along the banks of the Zêzere River. We head downhill and turn onto a dirt path that leads to vineyards and small vegetable gardens. The climate and proximity to the river foster a wide variety of vegetation and scenery throughout the year. Cork oaks, pines, and arbutus trees—which bear fruit before Christmas—along with climbing ivy, aromatic herbs, and brambles, which in summer are filled with delicious wild blackberries. Still in Souto, a landmark along the route is a curious shed with washbasins. Further on, as you descend through Bioucas, you’ll be amazed by the beauty and tranquility of the landscape shaped by the Zêzere River. From more open paths to narrower trails where the ground is quite uneven and often allows only one person to pass at a time, we arrive at Ribeira da Brunheta, a small hamlet dotted with a few houses. From here, the trail follows the riverbank. The vegetation is so dense that visibility is somewhat limited. The narrow trail allows you to feel even more connected to nature. After this, the ascent begins along a very uneven path until it joins a wide dirt road that passes by the Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Tojo. Reaching the paved road marks the end of this hike.
