PMS PR10 - Trilho da Fonte Falsa walking

Porto De Mós 7 kms 03:00:00

Description

The route begins next to the statue of Mr. João Coelho Lopes da Silva, a great benefactor of the region, and continues along Rua dos Carvalhos to Rua dos Olivais. Halfway down this street, turn left and climb to the highest point of the entire route. Next to the wayside shrine, you can see the entire village of Juncal. This is an iconic spot where picnics are a common occurrence. Once you’ve regained your strength, continue on to the Chapel of S. Miguel. On your way there, you’ll cross fields where farming has been practiced for centuries. According to legend, it was around the area where the chapel was built that Juncal was founded.

Next to the chapel, head down to the Ribeiro path and turn right. A little further on, at the footbridge over the Ribeiro, turn right and continue. At the end of the dirt road, turn right again at the intersection and climb up to the next one. When you reach the top, don’t miss the view of the Ribeiro Valley. Take it in while you catch your breath. Head left along the vineyards that lie to the right of the path. Begin the descent to the bottom of the valley, and shortly after, climb up to the start of the Fonte Falsa path.

This path, which winds between walls alongside a watercourse— a winter river and summer path—once connected the parish seat with the settlements to the north. Along this route, there is now a wooden walkway. At the end of the walkway, continue to the paved road and turn left. One hundred meters later, leave the paved road and take the path that appears on the right. At the next fork, take the path that climbs slightly to the right and continue straight ahead. At the start of the descent, you will see the Juncal Educational Institute and shortly after, you will return to the paved road. Follow Rua da Escola and then turn right downhill, next to the elementary school, until you reach the Mother Church. There, we invite you to visit the interior and admire the tile panels hand-painted by José Rodrigues de Sousa, founder of the Royal Factory of Juncal. Afterward, continue along Rua de S. Miguel, where you can see other panels from the Real Fábrica on the façade of house no. 14.

At the end, turn left onto the narrower street. There you will find another 18th-century tile panel, and you are now very close to where the route began.
