Description
This is a short circular trail offering great scenic, cultural, and environmental interest. It is 8.4 km long and easily accessible.
The trail begins at the recreation park next to the Almofala cemetery. Follow the trail markers to the bridge over the Varosa River. Cross through an agricultural area where chestnut trees still predominate and continue along the dirt path to the village of Bustelo. Along the way, you can observe the morphological depression of the Varosa River, a fairly extensive flat area regularly affected by flooding. This fact, combined with the geological characteristics unique to this area, gives this depression a distinctive landscape and a scenic setting of great beauty.
As you pass through Bustelo and rejoin the path back to Almofala, you can take a break at the Varosa river beach. Further ahead, you’ll find the Moinho marshland, where grains, potatoes, and vegetables are still grown. Upon returning to Almofala, visit the Village Museum, the Community Oven, and the Quinta Mill—facilities still used by the parish’s residents.
The route can be taken in either direction.
