Description
We start near the community water tanks in Parada, heading toward the senior citizens’ home, then continue along the municipal road until we reach a rural path where horse-drawn carts and large flocks of sheep still pass by. Further on, the main road to the Sanctuary of St. Antão da Barca appears, and there we begin to catch a glimpse of the vast expanse of water in the Baixo Sabor reservoir. We recommend stopping to enjoy the breathtaking scenery: the blue water of the reservoir, the green of the junipers, and, with a bit of luck, spotting various birds of prey.
After passing under the Mogadouro/Alfândega da Fé highway overpass, we enter a cobblestone path leading to the Sanctuary of St. Antão da Barca, whose chapel dates from the 18th century, featuring important murals inside, and was relocated to its current site as part of a heritage preservation project that is unique in the country. The new sanctuary consists of the old chapel and newly constructed buildings, such as the guesthouse, the bar-restaurant, and the museum space, where visitors can enjoy a striking photography and multimedia exhibition, "Faces of Devotion," where Faith is revealed through Light and the Gaze, as well as a collection of “ex-votos,” offered in gratitude for miracles granted, considered a distinctive feature of this riverside sanctuary.
We conclude the tour along a dirt path that leads to the edge of the reservoir, where a river beach will be located in the future.
