Starting at the river beach in Rua, Aboadela, the PR2 “Rota de São Bento” trail forms a 12-kilometer loop through the parishes of Aboadela, Sanche, Ôlo, Vila Chã, and Gondar. After passing through the parish of Sanche, we arrive at the village of Cruzeiro, in Gondar. The route passes through an ancient section of the Roman road, alongside the Marancinho stream, where a Roman bridge over the stream can still be seen. Next, a steep path leads us to the top of the mountain, at an altitude of 550 meters, in the village of Picotos. Once at the summit, with the lands of Basto visible on one side and, across a succession of rolling hills, the Marão and Aboboreira mountain ranges on the other, we follow the ridge of the hill until we reach, about 1,500 meters ahead, an ancient path. After passing the ruins of an ancient inn that served as a resting place for travelers and pack animals on their long and arduous crossing of the Marão, we ascend along a path that follows the old medieval road to the chapel of St. Benedict. Then, along forest paths that wind down the hillside, we begin the descent into the Aboadela Valley until, once in the valley, we enter an old trail that leads us to the Ovelha River. After crossing the river and the IP4 highway, we finally arrive at one of the highlights of this route—the village of Rua, or rather, Ovelha do Marão. This place, whose origins are lost in time, is the most iconic on this route. Steeped in history and stories, it is an architectural ensemble that surprises any visitor with its simplicity and rustic charm. After visiting this historic site, we return to the starting point.
