Description
This route will give you a unique perspective of the municipality of
Portimão, focusing more on its inland areas. In a diverse rural landscape
dominated by signs of human settlement, we see how
human activity has harmonized with nature through
traditional ways of using the land.
We will see
citrus groves, almond orchards, and farmland dotted with mastic trees and beautiful
carob trees, whose fruit is used in
traditional Algarve sweets. The scene is enlivened by flocks of goldfinches,
greenfinches, linnets, and chaffinches, unconcerned by the
watchful eyes of the birds of prey patrolling this area: the booted eagle and
the honey buzzard. During spring, you can spot the red-legged partridge with
its brood of chicks.
On the road’s slopes, you can
observe two plant communities with adaptations that allow them to
thrive in fire-affected areas: rockrose and eucalyptus.
You can also spot many specimens of the only native palm tree of the
Iberian Peninsula, the dwarf palm.
